The skinny on body fat

The body is a complicated machine, operating in many ways. One way is to store fat for survival. If the body is to survive long periods of no food, it needs a backup energy source or it will die. This is where fat comes in. Your body can and will store fat only for the intended purpose of using it later for survival during times of lower food availability. The body is simply not designed to feast all day, every day.

Your fat is stored energy just waiting to be released. Hormones are the chemical messengers that tell your body to either store more fat or signal fat cells to release the stored energy to be burned up.

If you want to burn fat (rather than store it), you have to control the right hormones. The reason we are storing more fat (and not burning it) is largely because our energy-balance signals are off. The good news is that it is possible to signal the body to start releasing the stored fat (and stop storing more).
